Fire blankets is a safety device, usually made available along with other fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, which can be used to help extinguishing accidental fires. They operate on the principle that smothering a fire starves it oxygen, and is commonly used to put out chip-pan fires, as well as bodily fires.

Fire blankets are specifically designed to extinguish small starting fires and are ideal for use in the home and residential spaces including garages, caravans, even boats, as they are compact, easy to store and user-friendly.

The fire blanket sheet itself is made of a fire retardant material enveloped by two layers of glass fibre fabric, and acts a safety device by starving the fire of oxygen once deployed over the flames, ultimately smothering it. Fire blankets can withstand temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius.

Fire blankets are the ideal fire safety tool when helping to immediately stop accidental fire outbreaks, especially fires that may have caught alight on a person’s clothes or in a cooking pan.

These fire safety tools are recommended to be stored in an accessible place, most likely this will be close to a kitchen or working space that is a vulnerable fire hazard, but not too close to potential sources of fires breaking out (for example, above stove tops or closeby to ovens).

Hanging a fire blanket in a convenient place is the best method of storage. The fire blanket unit usually has one or two brass mounting holes along the top, which allows it to be hung on wall brackets. The brackets should be positioned in such a place that won’t cause an obstruction when the fire blanket is being removed from its place to be used in a fire emergency.

When installing your own fire blanket, we recommend allowing our professional technicians to complete this task for you. However, you can also complete the installation yourself if you feel positive in your ability to install the fire blanket correctly, according to correct fire safety guidelines and requirements.

Testing and maintaining your fire blanket is also an important part of fire safety responsibility. Every 6 months, our technicians can come to inspect your fire blanket’s accessibility and proper installation, visible signage and instructions on the fire blanket, and that there is no physical damage to the blanket’s container and blanket itself.

Once used, fire blankets are not designed for reuse, and should be replaced once they experience application to a fire. Fire blankets, as protection tools, are great accompanying other fire safety products such as fire extinguishers.
